Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Kidz Clinics Programme

  • ‘Care of Domestic Animals in My Community’
  • ‘Greening of My Community’

Kidz Clinics of Women & Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA) and Roots & Shoots of the Jane Goodall Institute South Africa, have formed a partnership to create the ‘Jane Goodall’s Roots & ShootsKidz Clinics Program’ - a first of its kind. Kidz Clinics are using their existing clinic setup to address human community needs and Roots & Shoots SA will be addressing priority environmental and animal needs within these communities. With this partnership, we are providing a balanced and holistic approach to ensure the biggest impact in targeted areas.

The purpose of the ‘Care of Domestic Animals in My Community’ programme is to create animal ambassadors and representatives to educate the community on animal’s basic needs and to create a respect and love which will filter through the community, starting from the children. The ‘Greening in My Community’ programme will focus on creating school vegetable gardens, as well as focus on the importance of the environment within everyday life.

Presently, 30 teenagers from the Pholosho Primary/Secondary School’s eco-club within the Alexandra Community are participating in the 4 month ‘Care of Domestic Animals in My Community’ and ‘Greening of My Community‘ Roots & Shoots programmes.

Further schools and communities within the Boksburg, Orange Farm, Duduza and Pretoria Kidz Clinic areas will be participating as well.

Roots & Shoots Food Garden Project

Poverty, lack of resources and unemployment are challenges that face many communities in South Africa. Roots & Shoots South Africa helps to address such issues with well established and proven programmes, such as the Food Garden Project.

With immediate effect, food gardens directly address both human and environmental needs within schools and communities. Vegetables harvested from these gardens will feed individual families, as well as school learners as part of school feeding schemes, whereby learners receive a hot, nutritious meal during school hours.

Our Food Garden Project encourages the planting of food gardens within schools and communities, together with ongoing education that ensures the sustainable management of such gardens.

Communities for Primate Conservation Programme

The goal of this PASA/Disney programme is to engage communities in appreciation of Primates and their forest home and to work together to conserve Primates in their local community.

Through positive actions, communities can take action to help Primates though education and conservation projects.

Presently, Roots & Shoots South Africa is working with the Johannesburg Zoo’s two Honey Badger youth groups to run this 3 – 4 month Primate programme.

Palaeontology Project

Palaeontology is learning about living things that have lived in the past - thousands, millions and billions of years before humans and Palaeontologists use fossils to find out more about these mysteries. Fossils are the remains of ancient life that have been buried in the ground and in rocks, such as bones, teeth, shells, vegetation, impressions, nests, and footprints. These fossils can reveal to us what our planet used to be like, and how animals have evolved over time.

Roots & Shoots South Africa has created a ‘Palaeontology Roots &Shoots group’, founded by Juliet Price (R&S SA), Matthew Berger and Megan Berger. We will be encouraging the global youth to learn more about palaeontology and participate in our fun youth-based programme.

This programme will include monthly lesson plans and ideas, activities and games which will be launched from this website early 2012 - watch this space!

Roots & Shoots Role Model Programme

The Role Model Programme helps teenage boys address their issues and encourages them to think differently about their role in the community and the current circumstances and challenges they face on a daily basis. These main challenges originate from a lack of male role-models within the community, minimal parental supervision and peer pressure.

Young adult Roots & Shoots members are acting as role models, targeting relevant issues, helping individuals with school work, playing sports, mentoring, assisting and generally spending time with participants rebuilding hope, confidence, responsibility and group pride.

Presently, 40 teenage boys participate in our programme on a weekly basis.

Roots & Shoots Community Workshops

Roots & Shoots will be running monthly Saturday workshops targeting teenagers and the related challenges they face on a daily basis. These workshops will be informative, educational and interactive and will include learner workbooks that will be used to support the workshop content.

Presently, our workshops are facilitated in the Lehae community, which severely lacks infrastructure such as parks, clinics, police stations etc. We are aiming to support the youth and to keep them engaged in positive Roots & Shoots activities, instead of being influenced and affected by drug and alcohol abuse, crime, and teenage pregnancy.

Our monthly workshops will include topics such as Self Development, HIV/ AIDS/ STD’s awareness, teenage pregnancy, family planning and love life, drug and alcohol awareness, crime prevention, career orientation and community greening.

Roots & Shoots Sports Programme

Girls and boys of between 9 – 12 years from the community are encouraged to participate in our sports programme twice a week in the afternoons after school. Children play sports such as soccer, volleyball and cricket and also take the time to clean up the environment where they play.

Roots & Shoots members encourage community teenagers to participate and help out during the programme.
