ROOTS & SHOOTS GAUTENG

March and April have been very busy months and we’d like to update you on some of the exciting events that have taken place.

ROOTS & SHOOTS INDABA

This Indaba, held on 13 & 14 March, was attended by students from various schools and organizations within Gauteng. Feedback about projects was given by each organization and ideas about future projects were shared. Besides the fact that it rained the entire weekend!, the Indaba was interesting, educational and lots of fun!

EASTER EGGS PROJECT

We were very excited about the unexpected success of this project as the idea was only suggested at the Indaba weekend.

The following groups collected eggs for the project:
Headway
Kyalami Preparatory
St. Mary’s Preparatory
Holy Rosary Convent

The response was so great that we were able to deliver eggs to many more children than originally planned. Eggs were delivered to the following:
 the children in the CHOC ward at the Johannesburg General Hospital
 the children in Soweto
 street children
 Kids Haven (over 350 abused and abandoned children accommodated in a centre and village in Benoni and a shelter in Kimberley).

 The Sugarbush Foundation – where they are split between:
 Sithabile Child & Youth Care Centre (a centre in Benoni for over 100 children)
 Fred and Martie’s soup Kitchen (they feed over 1000 children)
 Agape Inner City Projects
 CLAW (Community Led Animal Welfare) who also feed 100’s of orphaned children in rural areas. A wonderful Easter sign, made by the children at Kyalami Prep, was delivered with these eggs.

This project was an incredible success and, once again, many thanks to all who participated.

‘CHRISTMAS CRACKER CHEER’
We will now be working on a ‘Christmas Cracker Cheer’ project (another idea recommended at the Indaba!) where all Roots & Shoots groups coolect small gifts and make crackers with a Christmas message inside which will be given to charities. We are planning to hold a ‘CHRISTMAS CRACKER CHEER’ picnic for all the Roots & Shoots groups and some (or all, if possible) of the selected charities. The size of the event will depend on the venue we arrange.

So, to all the Roots & Shoots groups, please start collecting small presents and making crackers with a Christmas message inside for this project.

SOAP APPEAL
The Children’s wards at Johannesburg Hospital are desperate for soap and have approached us to collect bars of soap for them. Please would you make a ‘soap collection box’ and ask each child to bring a bar of soap to school. We will then arrange collection – please contact Merle Finch on (011) 804 2648

Kind regards,

Sue and Di
